Oliver Cromwell is a devout, God-fearing country squire, magistrate and former member of Parliament. Parliament has not met in over a decade and as a result the policies of King Charles I have become increasingly unacceptable to many, including Cromwell. These have included the enclosing of common land for the use of wealthy landowners and the introduction of "Papist" rituals into the Church of England.
