In 1980 Sheffer, before becoming successful as an actor, under some inconvenient circumstances in his life, sold newspapers and "slept under the marble staircase in Grand Central Terminal for weeks while living off Unification Church spaghetti dinners." Sheffer was first seen on a nationwide basis as Ian Hayden on the ABC daytime soap opera One Life to Live, and as the teenage son of Michael Goodwin and Leigh Taylor-Young on the 1983 prime time serial The Hamptons.
