In 1996, it was taken over by Chemical Banking Corporation, which assumed the Chase Manhattan name though it continued to be run from the headquarters building which Chemical had taken over with the acquisition of Manufacturers Hanover Corporation by Chemical Chairman and CEO Walter V.
