He later trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in the city of Bristol, also in South West England. Cox played the role of Tristan Thorne in the 2007 movie Stardust. He was next seen in the 2008 film Stone of Destiny in which he played Ian Hamilton. He made his West End debut in a double bill of Harold Pinter's The Lover & The Collection at the Comedy Theatre in London, and in the same year played the Duke of Crowborough in the ITV drama series Downton Abbey.
