Author S.E. Hinton was born Susan Eloise Hinton, but published books under just her first initials, as editors thought readers would have a hard time accepting that a woman wrote such hard-hitting works as -The Outsiders and -Rumble Fish. Originally, the Oklahoma native took solace in writing when her father passed away, and she took inspiration from her own socially divided high school to write -The Outsiders, which was subsequently made into a movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Hinton even took a cameo role in the film, playing a nurse. Coppola then directed an adaptation of -Rumble Fish, and again Hinton joined the cast in a minor appearance as a hooker. The author also completed several more works including -Hawkes Harbor and -The Puppy Sister. ~ Cammila Albertson, Rovi LESS
