He started out in the 'teens on such films as Ince's Civilization. In 1922, he edited the first two-color Technicolor film, Toll of the Sea. Among the classics he has worked on include Little Lord Fauntleroy, A Star is Born and the Prisoner of Zenda. In 1939, Kern shared an Oscar with James E. Newcom for editing Gone with the Wind.
