George specialized in industrial films, documentaries and television commercials. He also helped found the Screen Directors Guild of New York and the Screen Directors International Guild. The Moscow-born George received his education in Paris and entered the film industry as an assistant director, editor and screenwriter. In 1935 George came to Hollywood as a journalist for French film journals and from there began helping to translate Hollywood films into French. George started working for the National Film Board of Canada during WW II where he produced informative and educational films for the war effort, and in 1942 he made the same kind of films for the U.S. government. His 1948 documentary short Toward Independence earned an Oscar. Eventually moving to Israel, George directed many films and produced television documentaries.
