From Omaha, NE, pretty Betty Jewel enjoyed some popularity in the last years of silent films, appearing opposite the young Gary Cooper in both The Last Outlaw and Arizona Bound and as Jack Holt's leading lady in The Mysterious Rider. All three were released in 1927 and she would make no more films. Jewel, in actual fact, had been a discovery of D.W. Griffith, who rather obviously had planned to turn her into another Lillian Gish. If that failed, the other option was to turn her into another Carol Dempster. She had appeared fleetingly in Way Down East (1920) but was apparently much in evidence on the set of other Griffith films, to the point of being nicknamed "Griffith's Third Orphan." ~ Hans J.
