A waiter at a beatnik cafe wants to fit in with the artistic patrons. When he accidentally kills his landlady's cat and covers the body in plaster to hide his mistake, it turns him into a successful artist and part of the cafe group. He continues making "art" this way and begins to use human forms. There are underlying messages of race, slavery, attitudes and perception.
