Barbara Pepper (May 31, 1915 – July 18, 1969) was an American stage, television, radio, and film actress. She is best known as the first "Doris Ziffel" on the sitcom Green Acres. Born as Marion Pepper in New York City, she started in show business at the age of 16 as one of the Goldwyn Girls where she met lifelong friend Lucille Ball. Born as Marion Pepper in New York City, she started in show business at the age of 16 as one of the Goldwyn Girls where she met lifelong friend Lucille Ball. Pepper began making movies and did radio parts. In 1943 she married an actor, Craig Reynolds (née Harold Hugh Enfield); they had two sons. After Reynolds died in 1949 in a California motorcycle accident, Pepper was left to raise their two sons alone. She never remarried. After that her roles were mostly confined to small TV parts (several appearances on I Love Lucy and Perry Mason) and movie parts, among them My Fair Lady and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. She may be best remembered as the first Doris Ziffel on Green Acres. However, her heart ailments forced her to leave the series and she was replaced by Fran Ryan. Barbara Pepper died on July 18, 1969, in Panorama City, California, aged 54, from a coronary thrombosis. LESS
